For our first trip of the year, we headed to Disney World in Orlando. We were able to score $200 flights total for two people. How? Allegiant Air! I hope this article helps any beginner who has never flown with Allegiant.

Allegiant Air is a budget airline that has been growing in our area for the last few years. They fly out of the three closest airports around us: GSP, AVL, and CLT.

Allegiant is not your standard airline, so keep that in mind if you decide to book with them. This is an airline that is similar to what basic economy on the larger airlines has become. You pay for your luggage, pay additional for carryons, and pay extra to choose your seat and free in-flight services are unavailable. For weekend trips, these things truly shouldn’t matter since most can pack a personal item for the weekend.

They are limited on their dates and destinations, so you do have to be flexible when booking. From Greenville, there weren’t flights when I needed them to make my trip work. However, I noticed that from AVL to SFB (Sanford/Orlando) they offer multiple daily flights since Sanford is a hub of theirs. This makes for an easy weekend trip to Orlando.

Recently, they announced summer flights from Asheville to Denver, Chicago, and Boston. Below are some things to consider before flying with Allegiant Airlines.

Luggage

Every passenger is able to bring one personal item.

One Carry-On bag per passenger is able to be purchased. As with other airlines, it must fit below the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin.

Passengers are able to pre-purchase up to 4 checked bags. This luggage must not exceed 40 pounds each. Additional weight does come with an additional price.

Boarding Pass

Cheaper airlines do come with fees if you aren’t careful. One of the easiest ways to avoid fees are by either downloading their app so you have your ticket on your phone or if you would rather print it out with your own printer. If you have your boarding pass printed at the airport, it will cost you $5.

In-Flight Services

Again, this is not a mainstream airline like Delta or United so additional fees are how they can keep their flight prices low. With that being said, bring your own snacks and drinks. Avoid buying these at the airport as well as they can be pricey.

My favorite travel hack is to bring one of my reusable water bottles (empty of course) so once I am through security, I can fill up my bottle for free at any of the water fountains. It is easy to become dehydrated from flying so make sure to drink lots of water!

Seats

Unless you’re traveling with children, don’t pay for seating. The flights are short and chances are, they may automatically seat your party together, or you can ask a fellow passenger if they would be willing to switch seats.

Should I fly with them?

Overall, if you don’t mind getting from point A to point B without all the frills larger airlines give, you should give Allegiant Air a try!
